The Living Memory (Periwinkle) — Floral Archival Series 01:

ARCHIVAL STUDY: MEMORY / ANCESTRY / THE AMERICAN SOUTH

Long before monuments carried their names, memory was planted in the soil.

Across parts of the American South, periwinkle can be found growing around historic African American burial grounds, its persistent blue-violet blossoms marking landscapes where the identities of those buried were not always preserved in the written record.

Hardy and enduring, the plant became part of a landscape of remembrance—surviving seasons, neglect, and the passage of generations.

The Living Memory draws from that relationship between land, ancestry, and historical memory.

Rendered through raw construction lines, expressive charcoal contouring, and translucent earth-toned watercolor washes, the composition transforms the periwinkle into a meditation on what survives when the archive is incomplete.

Names can disappear from records.

Stories can be omitted.

But memory finds other ways to remain.

A vintage wash softens the surface and creates subtle tonal variation, complementing the weathered, archival character of the botanical artwork.

The relaxed, boxy silhouette and slight drop shoulder create an intentional oversized profile designed to sit naturally across a range of frames.

The artwork is reproduced using Direct-to-Garment printing (DTG), preserving the charcoal linework, watercolor transparency, and fine botanical detail while maintaining a soft hand against the cotton.
